Jorge Mateo
Jorge Mateo Logs fourth steal
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 11:13 PM
Mateo went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Athletics.
Analysis: Mateo has seen limited playing time this season, though he could get more looks after Jackson Holliday was sent down to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday. Through 35 plate appearances, Mateo is slashing .250/.314/.406 with four steals, one RBI, five runs scored and five doubles. He's unlikely to take a full-time role from Jordan Westburg, Ramon Urias or Cedric Mullins, but Mateo offers utility value and speed while playing primarily versus left-handed pitchers.
Ryan Mountcastle
Ryan Mountcastle Swats homer in win
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 11:09 PM
Mountcastle went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Athletics.
Analysis: The long ball was Mountcastle's first hit in three games since he recovered from a minor knee issue. He posted multiple hits in seven of the 11 games prior to the injury. The first baseman has been solid this year, slashing .299/.364/.483 with three homers, 12 RBI, 15 runs scored and seven doubles over 99 plate appearances, though he has yet to attempt to steal a base.
Adley Rutschman
Adley Rutschman Clubs third homer
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 11:06 PM
Rutschman went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Athletics.
Analysis: Rutschman is on fire with an eight-game hitting streak, going 15-for-36 (.417) in that span with two homers, nine RBI and four runs scored. The catcher's surge has him up to a .324/.368/.438 slash line with three homers, 16 RBI, 16 runs scored and three doubles through 25 games. Rutschman's power numbers are more or less in line with his first two seasons and he's making more contact, but he's also posted a 6.1 percent walk rate so far. He's locked in as the Orioles' No. 2 hitter.
David Banuelos
David Banuelos Outrighted to Triple-A
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 7:53 PM
Banuelos cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles on Saturday.
Analysis: Banuelos is no longer on the 40-man roster but has accepted an outright assignment and will remain in the Orioles organization. He'll give the club some catching depth.
Gunnar Henderson
Gunnar Henderson Big day in rout
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 6:41 PM
Henderson went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 7-0 win over the A's.
Analysis: The 22-year-old shortstop capped the scoring on the afternoon by taking JP Sears deep in the seventh inning. The long ball was Henderson's third in the last four games, continuing a blistering stretch that has seen him rack up eight multi-hit performances in his last 12 contests while batting .408 (20-for-49). The surge has boosted Henderson's slash line on the season to .302/.361/.642 with nine homers, six steals, 22 RBI and 23 runs in 106 plate appearances.
Cole Irvin
Cole Irvin Blanks Oakland on Saturday
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 6:35 PM
Irvin (2-1) picked up the win Saturday, scattering four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over the A's. He struck out five without walking a batter.
Analysis: For the second straight start, Irvin led the Orioles to a combined shutout. The southpaw retired the first 10 batters he faced, and Oakland failed to get a baserunner into scoring position until he'd left the mound. Irvin tossed 63 of 89 pitches for strikes as he extended his scoreless streak to 14.1 innings, and his impressive stretch may have come in the nick of time to save his rotation spot -- Kyle Bradish (elbow) is ready to come off the IL, and John Means (forearm) may not be far behind. Bradish lines up to take Irvin's spot next Wednesday at home against the Yankees, but Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reported prior to Saturday's game that Baltimore could shift to a six-man rotation in the short term. Irvin sports a 3.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB through 28.1 innings.
Kyle Bradish
Kyle Bradish Set to rejoin rotation
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 12:33 PM
Manager Brandon Hyde said Saturday that Bradish (elbow) is poised to return to the Orioles' rotation, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Bradish's return can't come soon enough for an Orioles rotation also missing John Means (forearm) and Tyler Wells (elbow). Bradish made three rehab starts while recovering from a right UCL sprain that landed him on the 15-day injured list to begin the season. He pitched well in his last rehab outing with Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six over five frames, and the 27-year-old is ready to make his next start in the majors. He pitched every fifth day during his rehab assignment, so if he stays on that schedule, he could return Wednesday at home against the Yankees. The right-hander could rejoin Baltimore as part of a six-man rotation, with Hyde noting that "everything is up on the table right now."
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Sitting vs. southpaw
Sat, Apr 27, 2024, 11:24 AM
O'Hearn is not in the Orioles' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.
Analysis: With the Athletics sending out left-hander JP Sears, the lefty-hitting O'Hearn will open Saturday's game in the dugout. Adley Rutschman will start at designated hitter while James McCann forms a battery with starting pitcher Cole Irvin.
Craig Kimbrel
Craig Kimbrel Charged with second blown save
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 10:13 PM
Kimbrel blew the save in Friday's loss to the A's, allowing a run on two hits and three walks in one-third of an inning.
Analysis: Kimbrel allowed all five batters he faced to reach base safely, with the lone out coming when JJ Bleday was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch. While Kimbrel was lucky to escape with just one allowed, he was still charged with his second blown save of the year, the first since his first appearance of the season on April 1. Kimbrel hadn't allowed an earned run in 10 innings coming into Friday, striking out 15 in that span. Overall, the 35-year-old Kimbrel's 7-for-9 in save chances with a 1.59 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through 11.1 innings this season.
Corbin Burnes
Corbin Burnes Quality start in no-decision
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 9:52 PM
Burnes did not factor into the decision Friday against Oakland, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.
Analysis: Burnes was solid Friday, holding the A's to a lone run on a Shea Langeliers homer in the first inning. He'd depart with a one-run lead, though Oakland would tie the game off Craig Kimbrel in the ninth before beating the Orioles in extras, leaving Burnes with a no-decision. It's the first quality start in three outings for the 29-year-old right-hander -- Burnes failed to make it through six innings in his previous two starts. Overall, he's 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 35:8 K:BB through six starts (35.1 innings) this season. Burnes is currently lined up for a home matchup with the Yankees next week.
Austin Hays
Austin Hays Slated to run soon
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 2:44 PM
Hays said Friday that he will test out his left calf strain with some running in a couple days, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Hays injured his calf last weekend and was eventually placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. He's feeling better, but the real test will come when he does some running and ramps things back up. Before getting injured, Hays had lost his starting job in left field to Colton Cowser.
Ramon Urias
Ramon Urias Starting Friday
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 2:08 PM
Urias is starting at third base and batting ninth Friday against the Athletics, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: The 29-year-old has made just two starts over Baltimore's past 14 games, but he's back in the lineup Friday and should have a more regular role after top prospect Jackson Holliday was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Urias had a .703 OPS in 116 games last season but is off to a slow start in 2024 with a .194/.216/.222 slash line in 37 plate appearances.
John Means
John Means Getting another rehab start
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 1:51 PM
Means (forearm) will make another rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: The Orioles previously hadn't ruled out the possibility that Means' next start could come in the majors, but ultimately they've decided to give him at least one more tune-up. It's not a surprise, as the southpaw has really struggled on his rehab assignment to this point, collecting a 13.89 ERA, 2.41 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB in 11.2 innings. Means did get his pitch count up to 79 in his last outing, so he should be fully built up after Sunday's start. He could make his season debut with the Orioles as soon as May 3 in Cincinnati.
Jackson Holliday
Jackson Holliday Sent back to Triple-A
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 12:31 PM
The Orioles optioned Holliday to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday.
Analysis: The top prospect made his big-league debut April 10 in Boston to much fanfare, but he looked entirely overmatched at the plate in his first couple weeks of MLB action. Holliday went 2-for-34 with two walks, five runs and 18 strikeouts in 10 games, so the Orioles opted to return him to Norfolk. The 20-year-old could rejoin Baltimore for another look later in the season, but for now he'll head back to Triple-A, where he posted a 1.077 OPS in 56 plate appearances to start the year.
David Banuelos
David Banuelos Departs 40-man roster
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 12:27 PM
Banuelos was designated for assignment by the Orioles on Friday.
Analysis: The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for Ryan McKenna. It's the second time this month that Banuelos has been designated for assignment, so he could refuse this one if he wants to try his luck in free agency.
Ryan McKenna
Ryan McKenna Added to roster
Fri, Apr 26, 2024, 12:25 PM
The Orioles selected McKenna's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday.
Analysis: McKenna will provide manager Brandon Hyde with an outfield option against lefties. The 27-year-old has a career .221/.299/.318 slash line over parts of three major-league seasons and can handle all three outfield spots.
Gunnar Henderson
Gunnar Henderson Homer, three hits in win
Thu, Apr 25, 2024, 9:29 AM
Henderson went 3-for-3 in Wednesday's win over the Angels with a home run, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. He also stole a base.
Analysis: Henderson was hit by a pitch in the opening at-bat to start the game and wasted no time in getting his revenge, taking Tyler Anderson deep for a leadoff home run in his next trip to the plate to put the Orioles up 1-0. The star shortstop would then add a double and a two-run single in his next two-at bats while also being hit by a pitch for the second time in the contest. Henderson has now homered in back-to-back games and also extended his hitting streak to five games with Wednesday's performance. Even more impressive is the fact that he's tallied multiple hits in seven of his last 10 games.
Craig Kimbrel
Craig Kimbrel Notches seventh save
Thu, Apr 25, 2024, 8:58 AM
Kimbrel picked up the save against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk over one inning while striking out one.
Analysis: Kimbrel surrendered a leadoff single to Ehire Adrianza to open the bottom of the ninth, who then advanced to third on a throwing error by Jorge Mateo. This would lead to a run coming home for Los Angeles in the frame on a groundout to make it a 6-5 game, though Kimbrel was able to retire two of the next three batters to nail down his seventh save of the season. The veteran reliever has now converted each of his last seven save attempts after blowing the save to open the campaign, but he's also allowed a hit and a walk in each of his last two appearances.
Dean Kremer
Dean Kremer Fans 10, matches career high
Thu, Apr 25, 2024, 7:21 AM
Kremer (1-2) earned the win Wednesday over the Angels, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over 5.1 innings while striking out 10.
Analysis: Kremer shut out the Angels over the first five innings before surrendering a solo homer to Mike Trout in the sixth, followed by a single to Nolan Schanuel, which would lead to the right-hander being relieved by Jacob Webb. Kremer dominated Los Angeles' lineup with his four-seamer throughout the day while matching his career high with 10 strikeouts. He's now allowed three or fewer hits in three of his five starts to open the season, though he's also given up at least one home run in all but one of those outings.
John Means
John Means Builds up to 79 pitches
Wed, Apr 24, 2024, 9:33 PM
Means (forearm) struck out five and allowed three earned runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.1 innings in a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Norfolk.
Analysis: Means built up to 79 pitches in the rehab start, his fifth overall with Norfolk. The 31-year-old lefty hasn't performed as well as the Orioles had hoped during the rehab assignment -- he holds a 13.89 ERA, 2.41 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB in 11.2 innings -- but with Wednesday's outing arguably being Means' best yet, he could be cleared to return from the 15-day injured list soon. According to Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com, the Orioles haven't ruled out the possibility of Means returning from the IL to start Sunday versus the Athletics, though the club may prefer to have the red-hot Albert Suarez (11.1 scoreless innings through two starts) make another turn through the rotation.
