Matt Bowman Re-signs with Baltimore as NRI
Fri, Dec 20, 2024, 11:48 AM
The Orioles re-signed Bowman to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: He will earn $1.1 million if in the majors, with a chance for $400,000 more in incentives. Bowman finished last season with the Orioles -- his fourth club in 2024 -- and collected a 4.40 ERA and 24:13 K:BB over 30.2 innings in his four stops.
Jordyn Adams
Jordyn Adams Links up with Baltimore as NRI
Fri, Dec 20, 2024, 8:47 AM
The Orioles signed Adams to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: The Angels non-tendered Adams last month even as he was not yet eligible for salary arbitration. He's slashed just .176/.205/.216 over 78 plate appearances during his limited opportunities at the major-league level. Adams will likely begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Norfolk.
Kyle Bradish
Kyle Bradish Begins throwing program
Wed, Dec 11, 2024, 11:24 AM
Bradish (elbow) began a throwing program Wednesday, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Analysis: It's the first time Bradish has played catch since he underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in mid-June. The Orioles expect the right-hander to be ready to rejoin their rotation around midseason, although that's a rough timetable given how many hurdles he must clear.
Gary Sanchez
Gary Sanchez Signs with Baltimore
Sat, Dec 7, 2024, 8:57 PM
Sanchez signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract with the Orioles on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: Sanchez spent the 2024 season with the Brewers and was a decent source of power, popping 11 homers and maintaining a .172 ISO across 280 plate appearances. He should be locked into the backup job behind the plate while also potentially picking up a few extra starts at designated hitter.
Tyler O'Neill
Tyler O'Neill Latches on with O's
Sat, Dec 7, 2024, 6:08 PM
O'Neill signed a three-year, $49.5 million contract with the Orioles on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: O'Neill enjoyed a resurgent campaign after moving to Boston in 2024, slashing .241/.336/.511 with 31 home runs and 61 RBI across 473 regular-season plate appearances. Much of the 29-year-old's success came versus southpaws, against whom he posted a 1.179 OPS in 156 trips to the plate. Now in Baltimore, O'Neill could slot in primarily at DH given his limited range and injury history while occasionally taking over in the corner outfield for Colton Cowser or Heston Kjerstad against left-handed starters.
Thaddeus Ward
Thaddeus Ward Outrighted to Triple-A
Fri, Dec 6, 2024, 3:49 PM
The Orioles outrighted Ward to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Ward was plucked off waivers from the Nationals in November. He is no longer on the Orioles' 40-man roster but will remain in the organization. The right-hander held a 5.64 ERA and 107:94 K:BB over 119.2 innings with Triple-A Rochester in 2024.
Trevor Rogers
Trevor Rogers Visiting Driveline for velo gains
Tue, Dec 3, 2024, 4:03 PM
Rogers has been training at Driveline Baseball in Arizona this offseason in hopes of regaining some velocity, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Rogers averaged just 91.9 mph with his four-seamer in 2024, which was down 1.3 mph from 2023 and nearly three mph from its peak in 2022. Testing at Driveline revealed that Rogers' lower-body strength was lacking, and he believes getting a stronger lower half will allow him to rediscover a few ticks on his fastball. The pitcher also noted that he entered the offseason fully healthy for the first time in a couple years, which has allowed him "to do things in the weight room that I have not been able to do." Rogers posted a 4.92 ERA and 97:56 K:BB over 124.1 innings between the Marlins and Orioles in 2024 and spent the final five weeks of the season in the minors. He'll have to compete for a job in Baltimore's rotation, but upping his velocity will give him a better chance to bounce back in 2025.
Jeremiah Jackson
Jeremiah Jackson Signs MiLB deal with Baltimore
Mon, Nov 25, 2024, 7:15 PM
The Orioles signed Jackson to a minor-league contract Monday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Analysis: Jackson played in 121 games with Double-A Binghamton in 2024, batting .206 with 19 home runs, 61 RBI, 49 runs scored and 11 stolen bass as a member of the Mets organization. He will now get a shot to prove himself with Baltimore ahead of the 2025 campaign.
Franklin Barreto
Franklin Barreto Signs minor-league deal with O's
Mon, Nov 25, 2024, 7:08 PM
The Orioles signed Barreto to a minor-league contract Monday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Analysis: Barreto played in 29 games with Triple-A Rochester in 2023, batting .202 with seven home runs, 15 RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases over 99 at-bats. He spent the 2024 season with the Diablos Rojos del Mexico, producing a .343 average with 16 home runs and 63 RBi over 76 games. Barreto will now look to make the most of his opportunity with Baltimore ahead of the 2025 season.
Emmanuel Rivera
Emmanuel Rivera Settles at $1 million
Fri, Nov 22, 2024, 4:27 PM
Rivera agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the Orioles on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Rivera slashed .313/.370/.578 with four homers and 14 RBI in 73 plate appearances after joining the Orioles in August -- good enough to earn him a $260,000 pay increase for 2025. Though he's played well in his brief Orioles tenure, the 28-year-old is expected to fill a reserve role next season.
Kyle Bradish
Kyle Bradish Expected back around midseason
Fri, Nov 15, 2024, 2:41 PM
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Friday that the team is counting on Bradish (elbow) returning around midseason, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Bradish underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in mid-June. Elias had said previously that he expected the pitcher to require 12-to-18 months to rehab, so a midseason return would be on the short end of that timetable. Any timeline is approximate at this point, as Bradish has yet to begin a throwing program.
Tyler Wells
Tyler Wells Midseason return expected
Fri, Nov 15, 2024, 2:37 PM
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Friday that he expects Wells (elbow) to return by midseason, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Wells underwent a UCL revision and internal brace augmentation surgery on his right elbow in mid-June. While he was able to avoid a second Tommy John surgery, he's still expected to need at least 12 months or so to rehab. Elias did not seem to commit to Wells' potential role in 2025 when he does return.
Jorge Mateo
Jorge Mateo Could be limited in spring training
Fri, Nov 15, 2024, 2:32 PM
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Friday that Mateo (elbow) might not be fully recovered for the start of spring training, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Analysis: It's a contradiction of what Elias said in October about Mateo's recovery from UCL reconstruction surgery on his left (non-throwing) elbow, although the revised timetable does not seem to be the result of a setback. Elias did add that he expected Mateo to be ready for close to a full 162-game schedule. Mateo is slated for a utility role with the Orioles in 2025.
Grayson Rodriguez
Grayson Rodriguez Fully recovered from lat injury
Fri, Nov 15, 2024, 2:26 PM
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Friday that Rodriguez is completely recovered from his right lat strain and will enter spring training without restrictions, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Rodriguez missed the final two months of the regular season and the playoffs due to the injury, but he had resumed throwing off a mound by September and should have a normal offseason. The right-hander finished the 2024 campaign with a 3.86 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 130:36 K:BB over 116.2 innings covering 20 starts.
Vimael Machin
Vimael Machin Gets NRI from Baltimore
Mon, Nov 11, 2024, 1:20 PM
The Orioles signed Machin to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Machin, 31, played in the Mexican League in 2024, slashing a ridiculous .401/.495/.579 with seven homers in 85 games. The utility player hit .208/.290/.261 over parts of three seasons with the Athletics from 2020-22.
Thaddeus Ward
Thaddeus Ward Scooped up by Baltimore
Mon, Nov 4, 2024, 2:08 PM
The Orioles claimed Ward off waivers from the Nationals on Monday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Analysis: Ward, who turns 28 in January, spent all of this season at Triple-A Rochester, posting a 5.64 ERA and 107:94 K:BB over 119.2 innings. He will likely begin 2025 as rotation depth at Triple-A Norfolk.
Rene Pinto
Rene Pinto Claimed by Baltimore
Mon, Nov 4, 2024, 2:05 PM
The Orioles claimed Pinto off waivers from the Rays on Monday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Analysis: Pinto began the 2024 season as the Rays' starting catcher but was sent down in early May after a slow start and was never recalled. The 28-year-old has hit .231/.263/.404 with 10 home runs over 82 games at the big-league level. Baltimore has an opening at backup catcher and Pinto will be a candidate to fill it.
Seranthony Dominguez
Seranthony Dominguez Option for 2025 exercised
Mon, Nov 4, 2024, 1:33 PM
The Orioles exercised Dominguez's $8 million club option for 2025 on Monday.
Analysis: Dominguez collected a 3.97 ERA and 28:9 K:BB over 22.2 innings while notching 10 saves down the stretch of the regular season for the Orioles after being acquired from the Phillies via trade. While Dominguez finished the 2024 season as Baltimore's closer, Felix Bautista (elbow) should reclaim that job in 2025.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn $8 million club option exercised
Mon, Nov 4, 2024, 12:53 PM
The Orioles exercised O'Hearn's $8 million club option for 2025 on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: O'Hearn made $3.5 million in 2024, so he will be getting a nice salary bump in 2025. The 31-year-old has slashed .275/.329/.450 with 29 home runs over 254 regular-season games during his two years in Baltimore. He'll garner regular playing time against right-handed pitching again next season.
Cionel Perez
Cionel Perez Club option picked up
Mon, Nov 4, 2024, 12:41 PM
The Orioles exercised Perez's $2.2 million club option for 2025 on Monday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Analysis: Perez, 28, held a 4.53 ERA and 46:28 K:BB over 53.2 innings for the Orioles this season. He posted a 53.5 percent ground ball rate and didn't surrender a single home run over his 62 appearances.
